Mokelumne Hill, commonly referred to as "Moke Hill" by locals, is a charming community rich with history. The town takes its name from the neighboring Mokelumne River, which is Miwok for the "people of Mokel." Once one of the richest gold mining towns in California, Mokelumne Hill was founded in 1848 by a group of Oregonians. By 1850 the town was one of the largest in the area, with its population reaching as high as 15,000 with people of all nationalities. By the 1860s the gold started to run out and the town's population diminished. The town today is a quiet place, with lots of tourism due to its historic status.

Fun Fact:From 1959-1977 Mokelumne Hill was home to Lucile S. Davidson, who was known as "The shoe lady of Mokelumne Hill." She was in The Stockton 'Record' and later in the Guinness Book Of World Records for having the largest privately owned glass shoe collection in the world!...hmmm maybe that's why my shoe paintings found a home at Petroglyphe Gallery...huh?

A line of text could become the reflection of a cloud on the surface of the American River, which she depicted in a series of collages....

Title: "Sunset Over Lake Chapala" Medium: Collage Size 40"x100"

"Sunset Over Lake Chapala" is a custom commissioned collage diptych (meaning two pieces that go together) made for an art collector, Dorothy, who resides in Roseville CA. She wanted an art piece to celebrate the spectacular landscape near her vacation home in Lake Chapala, Mexico...and what a gorgeous area that is...let me tell you!

I thoroughly enjoyed talking with Dorothy in her home, listening to her stories, learning about her cherished memories and her adventures in Mexico. I learned that the area around the lake near Guadalajara is known for its "jaw-dropping, awe-inspiring" sunsets. I learned that the stars shine so brightly at night that your eyes can hardly believe what they are seeing. And I learned about heart-felt memories from a dear lady who was willing to share them with me, so I could have meaningful insight from which to create her piece of art...Gosh, I Love what I get to do!

To help me design the perfect piece for Dorothy, I took many photos of the interior of her beautiful home including photos of the furnishings, existing art, and the lovely oriental carpets - Look closely at the finished collage and you will find small, torn bits of photographs of the paisley scrolls from her oriental carpet hidden within the foliage.

Much of my art business involves custom work either for private or corporate clients, and I thoroughly enjoy the process! It is both challenging and rewarding for me to create such personal paintings for my collectors. I often use family photos, vacation maps, personal letters, and other such collage materials in my work. My clients enjoy the "seek and find elements" within my work especially when created just for them. Sometimes collectors even call me months after receiving their piece to tell me that they just discovered a hidden word within the layers of their collage painting...That always makes my day!

Title: Lovely Peonies

Lovely Peonies is a custom commissioned collage painting made specially for a private collector. The client, who is a floral designer herself, loves flowers of all types; but pink peonies are her very favorite! I used collage materials in a color palette to harmonize with her antique bed quilt in keeping with the historic beauty of her vintage home. Hidden within the painting are words and phrases that hold special meaning to her - including a favorite Bible verse.

The most stunning gallery. Built to surround and protect an archeological treasure, the mosaic floors of a Roman guesthouse.

They made a wonderful fuss of the collection. As you can see, they framed nearly 50 of the 125 collages, and the others are in folders where they were well looked through.

I was honored to be able to attend the opening ceremony for the artists, and enjoyed talking with many of them. I'm impressed with the commitment Kaiser Permanente has for visual arts in the healing process.

Harmony, installed in a collectors' home

Elaine came to me with a request and an idea for a custom collage painting made in her late husband’s memory. In her lovely home, I sat with Elaine, and over a cup of tea, as she shared charming details about Roy’s life as a musician, entertainer, teacher, and world traveler. Multi-talented, he mastered the piano, balalaika, guitar, and accordion, all of which are depicted in the collage painting. I learned that one of his favorite instruments was the balalaika, a beautiful traditional Russian stringed instrument which I had never even of heard of before. He was an artist himself, and I was a privileged viewer of his home hallway art gallery. Roy even had a special saying for which he was known in his circle of friends…a saying that just MUST be incorporated into the collage.

Inspired by a life well lived, I returned to my studio to create sketches and to begin developing the piece. As I often do, I hid words of special meaning, including Roy’s special saying, in the artwork to encourage a deeper observation by the viewer.

The piece was made specially to hang on the brick wall over the fireplace mantle. The colors were chosen to harmonize with the room. Roy’s collection of instruments are displayed on the wall and on the hearth near the artwork.

It is my hope that you enjoy learning the “Stories Behind the Art” – a new column appearing each month in my art newsletter. Collectors’ photos and stories are shared only with their permission.

Dallas Museum of Biblical Art Acquires My Art

I am very pleased to announce that the Museum of Biblical Art in Dallas, Texas is acquiring my conceptual art piece titled, Open Door Policy, from my Visions of Heaven Series for their permanent collection. The nationally recognized museum suffered a terrible loss of their fine art holdings in a fire in 2005. Since that devastating fire, they have rebuilt the museum and are scheduled to re-open in the fall of 2009 with a brand new collection of Biblical Themed artwork. Open Door Policy is a three dimensional interactive collage / assemblage where the viewer is invited to actually touch and open the antique door, revealing the collage tapestry of visions of heaven.

I'm pleased to announce that my conceptual wax collage piece titled, Marriage Fruit, will be exhibited at the acclaimed Salmagundi Art Club in New York,
May 11 - 29, 2009, as part of the National Association of Women Artists 120th Celebration.

The Salmagundi Art Club originally formed as the Salmagundi Sketch Club in 1871, and used to meet in Johnathan Scott Hartley's studio. Then in 1917 a landmark mid-nineteenth century brownstone building located at 47 Fifth Avenue in Greenwich Village became the home for the gallery-club. Following a tradition of 138 years, the Salmagundi Art Club continues to serve as a center for fine artists from New York and around the country providing art exhibitions, classes, demonstrations and art auctions throughout the year.

Talking trash with four Sacramento artists
By Emily Scott

“Carol’s Lucky Shoes” by Eileen Downes, recycled-media collage.

“What a piece of trash!” That phrase uttered aloud might get you kicked out of an art gallery right on your tuchis. However, for four Sacramento artists who use old magazines, scrap metal, scavenged wood and other discarded objects in their creations, such words would undoubtedly be received as high praise. “I love walking through the scrap yard and seeing all this discarded waste and knowing that I will take some of it out of the landfill and create a beautiful sculpture with it,” says Kristen Hoard, sounding like a kid in a candy store. Hoard creates sculptures from discarded metal; her favorite recycled piece is a jellyfish made from the bottom of a Weber barbecue. “Whenever I tell anyone that it’s a Weber barbecue, they immediately see what it was originally and are amazed at what it turned into,” she says. In the studio, Hoard uses an environmentally friendly alcohol-based gel to heat up some of her sculptures. “The gel provides a nice warm fire element without the smoke and soot going into the environment,” she emphasized. Any leftover scrap metal is used in other projects, both her own and the artists she shares her studio with, so there’s very little waste. Jill Stafford, a collage and mixed-media artist, also creates works from recycled materials, such as old cigarette boxes. She paints the exteriors, adds some collage pieces and, depending on the piece, she may design the inside of the box as well. “I love the idea that I can give this object designed to promote smoking a completely different life,” she explains. In addition to using old cigarette boxes, she often finds that the roadside is a veritable smorgasbord of treasures. She often discovers discarded paper with unique fonts and perfect weathering. “Our resources are becoming so incredibly limited, why not utilize as many alternative objects as you can?” she asks. That is just what painter and printmaker Andrew Littlefield does. He works at a print shop, where he finds old pallets, plates from printing presses, paper and metallic Mylar sheets that are a byproduct of the proofing process. “We all need to reduce, reuse, recycle,” he says. “I’m hoping to set an example in the way I’ve been working with garbage.” Lately, Littlefield has been making transfer prints from his travels on reclaimed plywood, then putting on the finishing touches with pencil and charcoal. Green art isn’t a passing phase for Andrew. He uses reclaimed materials because it’s his favorite medium. “I know it’s important for all of us to do everything we can to be as green as we can,” he says. “It’s our responsibility to the future and to the next generation. I can see the artist community leading the way.” Eileen Downes, a self-proclaimed layerist collage painter, used to work for an environmental engineering firm. She creates paintings using torn pages from old magazines as her palette, creating a rough-around-the-edges mosaic effect. “I work the image by adding and subtracting tonal values of paper until I create the desired effect,” she says. Downes took a momentary break from her work to broach the eternal debate surrounding art. “Art is a reflection of life, what is going on in the nation and the world,” she says. Which just might mean society is finally starting to clean up its act. With that said, go recycle this paper. Or give it to Downes.

"Oh My"....Bees in the studio!

Yes, that's right, there are bees in my studio.
It seems that with all this lovely spring weather we are having lately the honey bees have decided to make my studio chimney their new home. I started noticing one or two bees, then ten or so, and then soon there were hundreds of them flying around my studio. The "bee man" came to remove the hive (he will take it to a bee keeper) and spray an ecologically non-toxic repellent to discourage any future nesting there. He said it was a hive of about 12,000 bees, yep 12,000! Wow! Who knows, maybe my next series will be about Bee's. They are really quite interesting creatures. Funny thing is that I often use bee's wax in my collage paintings...if only I could have thought of a way to harvest the wax and keep the bees....

What is Good Art?

So, What makes any one particular piece of art good? What makes one painting better than another? We could discuss all of the technical, compositional, asthetic components of art here (but that could easily be learned in Art School), but then we would miss out on the most important definition of good art. That would be the intensity of the emotional response the viewer has when observing a piece of art. The personal response is just that...personal. it is entirely subjective, and the very most influential reason a piece of art is good. It is also the very most influential reason a person buys a particular work of art. I tell my collectors, and customers for whom I make custom commissioned artwork to pay close attention to their first impression about the piece, their first reaction. If it is a reaction they want, then that is the piece of art for them.

Art Trip to Chicago

I just returned from a fantastic trip to Chicago. I was impressed with the beauty and splendor of this fine city. Although the weather was unseasonably warm (nearly 90 degrees in October) I had an opportunity to walk along Lake Michigan, see the sights, enjoy fine food, explore art museums and visit fine art galleries. It was with one of these galleries, Woman Made Gallery, in the Milwaukee Avenue Arts Corridor that I had a previously scheduled appointment with the director, Beate Minkovski. I am pleased that after this meeting we secured a showing of my work including both originals and prints. I am looking forward to this exhibition planned for Nov and Dec 2007.

(She has great legs and ankles too) She came to my studio one afternoon with a carload of shoes, and I took many positioning photos from which to work. My studio is equipped with a black backdrop drape and spot-lights, so I could determine positioning for interesting shadows.

What is Collage?
Collage, pronounced ko-lahj', simply means pasting or glueing papers or objects onto a surface.
When did Collage start as a fine art form?
In the early 1900's the modernist avante-garde movement began using collage as a fine art medium. Artists such as Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque were atracted to the use of everyday materials from which to create their works of art.
How long does it take you to make one of your collages?
OK, the question that artist's hate to hear, but a reasonable question none the less. I am asked this question by several customers at every art showing I have attended, and the following is my very best attempt at a straight forward answer: That is a difficult question, as I work on as many as 5 layered collages at a time at various stages of completion. What I can tell you is that the process is very labor intensive from the collecting of papers, tearing of papers, re-tearing of papers, gluing many layers, peeling many layers, and then applying the final touches to the pieces. I give each piece of artwork my very best attention, and each piece holds a part of me in it.
Can you describe your process?
My collage artwork is composed of many layers of torn paper. I use torn magazine papers as my "palette of paint" working the image by adding and subtracting tonal values of paper until I create the desired effect. I enjoy how words, phrases, and imagery from the magazine papers appear almost magically between the edges of the torn paper adding to the meaning of the piece. I leave the rough edges of the collage visible which adds to the layered feeling, and I add a touch of oil pastel to enchance the textural quality of the rough glued papers.
How durable are your collage paintings?
I use archival matte medium and acid free backing paper for my artwork. The magazine paper is not acid free, but is from higher quality printed magazines. The artworks should be framed under glass or plexi without touching the artwork itself. Avoid placing the piece where it would be in direct sunlight.
Do you do commissioned work?
I LOVE working closely with the client, and can make a custom commissioned piece specially for you. Often clients and collectors like me to use their own family photos, letters, maps from vacations etc. to create their custom layered collage. I'm getting ready for my art show at 20th Street Art Gallery in Sacramento for the month of May. I have received a lot of interest in the subject matter of this upcoming exhibition: God's Wings, a collection of collages embracing the grace and beauty of butterflies. This show was purposefully timed to occur in Spring. Now, I was thinking that my collages are philosophically a bit like the butterflies in Spring in that I take something ordinary (magazine papers) and transform it into something of beauty (artwork). This idea got me thinking about transformation in general: transformation of caterpillars into butterflies, Winter into Spring, creative children into creative adults, life into death etc. The ultimate transformation of life into death or eternal life in Heaven is also the subject of a new art project and blog: see www.heavenartproject.blogspot.com for details. The California Cooperative Art Project

I hope you all get a chance to see the California Cooperative Art Project that will be on display at the California State Capitol Basement Gallery at 10th and L Street in Sacramento; April 2 - April 13, 2007. For the last two years, I have been very involved in the production of this large scale art piece and securing this display venue. This 36" x 240" canvas painting traveled all over California to 29 participating artists who contributed painted, collaged, or drawn imagery to the piece. ...That’s how Sacramento collage artist Eileen Downes sees it. While some artists struggle with the business side, Downes takes a realist’s approach. “I find being successful involves a lot more than talent,” she says. “You have to be a business-minded professional. Everything you do marketingwise has to fit your plan. It’s important to tell people you’re an artist. My e-mail has my website and tells people what I do—that I’m an artist who paints with torn paper.” Recently, Downes received a commission while she was making reservations at a local bed-and-breakfast inn. “The owner looked at my website, liked my work and commissioned a large piece,” Downes says. “You don’t always know where your business is going to come from.”
Stephen Simonson, gallery manager at 20th Street Art Gallery in midtown Sacramento, calls Downes a “dream artist.” “She is doing a lot to try to make it happen,” he says. “She comes in with a passion and a drive that makes the gallery want to do more for her.”

Once you have a good relationship with a gallery, maintaining it probably means you don’t show in another gallery in the same geographic region or sell work right from your studio. “Although I do not have an exclusive contract with 20th Street Gallery or any other gallery—and I caution artists never to sign any totally exclusive gallery contract—for any local sales of my originals, I like to refer my collectors to the 20th Street Gallery for purchase,” says collage artist Eileen Downes. “If the buyer is out of the area, I try to match them to another gallery that could sell my work—for example, the Woman Made Gallery in Chicago. I think it is better to use a gallery for the sale of my originals, and working like that always encourages good artist/gallery relations, which is very important to the success of the artist.”

Eileen’s Helpful Tips
For The Beginning Art Collector

1. Buy art if you absolutely LOVE the art piece. This seems like a simple premise, but so many beginning collectors get caught up in the “investment perspective” of art collecting. If a piece of artwork speaks to you on an emotional level by appealing to your memories of childhood, for example you will always be happy with your purchase regardless of any perceived investment potential of the work.

2. Visit art galleries, museums, and artist studios often to get an idea of what the art world is like. Many cities have gallery walks in the art district where galleries open their doors and offer refreshments, music, and the artists are there to answer questions about their work. This is a non-threatening way for first-time gallery goers to observe. Don’t be afraid to ask the artist questions; we really like to talk about our work! You are not “bothering” us, and there are no “dumb questions.”

3. Revisit a few of the galleries that you found particularly interesting at a less busy time. Spend some time in the gallery, sit in front of the piece you are interested in, ask the gallery staff questions about the work and questions about the artist. A good gallery will know about their artists: Where did she get her training? What medium is the work? What is involved in the artist’s creative process? Where has she exhibited? Does she work full-time as an artist? Where can her work be seen in any public or corporate collections? Where has her work been published?

4. Some galleries allow the work to be purchased on a conditional basis, and if the buyer doesn’t like the piece in his home he may return it (in good condition of course). Other galleries offer a representative to go to your home and install the piece for you. Don’t be afraid to utilize the expertise and services of the gallery – that is what they are there for!

5. Don’t ever allow yourself to be intimated by an art gallery. If the gallery staff acts snobbish, go somewhere else. You are the customer, you are buying art, and they are there to help you. There are many very pleasant galleries in which to invest your art collecting time.

6. Find out about the artist. Ask to see the “artist binder” where you will find an artist statement, bio, and exhibition history. An artist who has experience in exhibitions will be more collectible than one who doesn’t. You can also search the artist online to discover more information about her. Never try to “undercut” the gallery by contacting the artist directly. A professional artist will not shortchange or sell-out her gallery. Look for published articles about the artist and her work. An artist who has some media following will be more collectible than one who doesn’t.

7. Does the artist release Signed Limited Edition Prints of her work? Popularity of these prints often makes the originals more valuable.

8. Buy art that fits your own family budget. If you spent more than you really should have, you may have a negative connection to the artwork every time you view it in your home. There is artwork available to fit every budget, from high end originals, to Limited Edition Giclee Prints, to posters.

9. Have the prices of the artist’s work been steadily and gradually increasing over the years. This is a sign of a strong career development; artificially inflated prices are often just fake.

10. Is the artwork framed using archival materials? Is everything that comes in contact with the actual piece acid-free? This insures that your art investment will remain protected and sound. Ask the gallery if there are any special precautions about how and where the work should be hung. Certain media should not be hung in direct sunlight, for example.

Kitty in the Studio

Our family cat, Emmy likes to keep me company when I work in my studio, as she happily involves herself in my artistic activities. I hope you enjoy seeing the pictures of her and the collage portrait that I made of her. Feline curiosity can be a problem though, as I must keep a close eye on her so that she does not get into anything dangerous. For some reason she likes to sit on papers on my computer desk. The artwork is a collage painting made from bits of torn magazine papers, and torn photos from the property grounds, as well as torn photos of the heirloom oriental carpet that graces the parlor of the historic inn. Close-ups of the piece showing more detail can be seen in the posts below. Today is Wed November 29th, and I have been working in my studio all day. It is a great art day, lighting from outside is wonderful, and I'm working on a new commissioned collage piece. Today is a good art day! I'm working on gestural scketches for a large commissioned piece of artwork of an angel. I am excited about producing this artwork for a local Bed and Breakfast Inn. I have taken photos of the victorian home, furnishings, and garden from which to help me create. I have these photos pinned up all over the walls of my studio, classical music is on, and I'm in the creative mood. Blessings to all.

It's early Saturday morning and I'm looking forward to working a lot in my studio today. I am going to edge-bind the large California Society of Layerists and Multi Media Cooperative Art Project that I started in April 2005. This is a 36" x 245" rolled canvas that traveled to 28 artists all over California for a year and a half, each artist adding to the cooperative painting themed "California". It was really a fun artistic endeavor. I have included a photo of my part of the artwork for you to see. When I'm done binding it I will photograph the completed project to show you to. Today is Thurs. November 2, and this is the very first time I have ever done a blog. I'm not sure really what to do, so here goes my best attempt at it.
